This scenic design was rendered for OPPA’s upcoming production of Spelling Bee, before the production was unfortunately cancelled due to OPPA having to close it’s doors Summer of 2026. This concept, designed for their intimate black-box space, was designed with a high school theatre classroom in mind. With lots of audience participation in this production, I wanted to create a setting that made sense for an audience to be so close to the action on stage and made sense within the confines of a small 40 seat space, thus I thought turning the room into a classroom would be the most immersive. Some elements worth noting are programs on the wall from past OPPA productions, appearing as if they were shows produced by this fictional high school, and genuine educational theatre posters I’ve purchased for the youth theatres I regularly work with.
